FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
OUR SCHOOL DAY
Our first bell rings at 9.00am, registration begins at 9.05, and classes at 9.15. Breaktime is 11.10-11.30am. We have three lunch sittings so that everyone can eat comfortably in our canteen together. Classes end at 3.25 and extra-curricular activities begin.
We are very proud of our uniform, which offers elements of choice so that everyone can feel comfortable and smart whatever their size, shape or gender. Our uniform is gender neutral and all students can choose from the range of uniform items. Our local suppliers provide the Shimna items, and other items are widely available and affordable. Our Parent Council operates a uniform SwapShop.
HOW DO I GET THERE?
The walk or cycle to Shimna is magnificent, along the promenade or through the network of parks. Shimna is also well served by bus routes on which buses deliver students into the school grounds and collect them in the afternoon. Students arriving by car can be left off in Donard Park to walk in by the back lane through the pedestrian gate.
A FEW MORE QUESTIONS?
WHAT ABOUT SCHOOL FOOD?
Breakfast is served from 8.30, there are cheesy toasts, pancakes, teacakes and mini pizza for break, and we serve a wide ranging lunch menu, including vegetarian and healthy eating options as well as some treats. We have a cashless payment system, so that all our students can eat together, whether they buy their lunch, are entitled to free school meals or bring packed lunch. Our horticulture students grow vegetables to enrich the menu, and our students occasionally run fundraising Fair Trade tuck shops and bun sales.
IS MUSIC TUITION AVAILABLE?
In our timetabled music classes students play keyboards, ukuleles, recorders, whistles and a range of percussion instruments. Voice and instrument tuition is also available in brass, woodwind, guitar and drums.
