THE INTERNATIONAL DIMENSION
Our Amnesty International group engages with prisoners of conscience through letter writing, signing petitions, raising awareness through assemblies. Our students actively engage with refugee and asylum seeking communities, raising funds, seeking friendship, providing mobile phones. Our students raise funds for Habitat for Humanity and have travelled to Ethiopia, to India and to Romania to build homes alongside the local community. Shimna was Northern Ireland's first Specialist School in Languages and the International Dimension.
LANGUAGES AND TRAVEL
All our students study two from a choice of: French; German; Spanish; Irish. European Day of Languages is a key date in our calendar, when our bilingual students share their languages: Polish; Lithuanian; Tagalog; Turkish... We have extra curricular language clubs which have included Latin, Arabic, Italian...Students travel on languages trips to France and Spain, history trips to Germany, ski trips to Italy, on European work experience. In 2020 Shimna became Northern Ireland's first PASCH Schule, and our students have already travelled to soccer training in Hamburg, an engineering internship with Mercedes Benz in Koblenz and we look forward to many more opportunities. Each year our students win scholarships to attend the Donegal Gaeltacht.
